We are seeking a proactive and creative Communications Associate to join our team. This position will play a key role in supporting the Director of Communications and Marketing in various communication and marketing initiatives. POSITION SUMMARY:
As the Communications Associate, you'll play a pivotal role in advancing the communications and marketing efforts of CalNonprofits. This position is responsible for managing our social media presence, keeping our website current, and generally working in close collaboration with the Director of Communications and Marketing to raise CalNonprofits’ visibility and impact in California and across the nation. The position may be remote, based out of one of our existing offices, or hybrid, but all candidates must be based in California.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage CalNonprofits’ presence on social media platforms (X, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), including content creation, scheduling, and engagement.
- Update and support maintenance of CalNonprofits’ website content using WordPress, ensuring content is current, engaging, on-message, and aligned with organizational goals.
- Assist with the development and production of bi-monthly newsletter
- Support the Director of Communications and Marketing in media relations activities, such as maintaining and updating media lists and drafting press releases.
- Monitor analytics and create reports to measure the success of communications efforts.
- Provide administrative support as needed, including maintaining communication materials and files; additional team support duties as assigned.
- Collaborate with team members to brainstorm and execute campaigns that promote CalNonprofits’ mission and programs
GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Create a social media schedule, assist with generating content ideas, draft and post content, and manage engagement on social media sites
- Format the newsletter and other e-blasts; source and create images; draft content
- Serve as a proofreader/copy editor
- Help develop and write content for various channels, including website, newsletters, and promotional materials
- Provide regular updates to the website; make recommendations for content strategies based on analytics reporting Assist in basic troubleshooting of website issues and liaise with external web developers as needed
- Design, or oversee the design of, graphics as needed for social media, the website, the newsletter, and for other promotional needs
- Organize and maintain communications files
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or related field or equivalent experience
- 1-3 years of experience in communications, marketing, or related fields, preferably in a nonprofit setting
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in social media platforms and social media management tools
- Basic graphic design skills and experience with design software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) preferred
- Experience with website content management systems, particularly WordPress
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Attention to detail, and an eagle-eye for proof-reading
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Passion for CalNonprofits’ mission and commitment to supporting the nonprofit sector in California
- Experience editing photos and videos is a plus
- Knowledge of or experience with social/digital advertising campaigns is a plus
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The starting compensation for this position is commensurate with experience, ranging from $70,000 to $85,000 per year. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, along with a 403b retirement plan featuring a 6% match. Additional perks include company-paid life insurance and both long-term and short-term disability coverage. Employees also enjoy 15 paid time off (PTO) days and 14 paid holidays annually. To support remote work, a stipend for home internet and phone usage is provided. Moreover, CalNonprofits is recognized as a Public Service Loan Forgiveness qualified employer, providing additional financial benefits for eligible individuals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate. The employee may be required to sit or stand in a stationary position for more than 50% of the time. This position constantly operates a computer and other office productivity equipment.
