 JOB TITLE: Policy Director 

REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer

We are seeking an experienced, high-energy, dynamic individual to serve as our next public policy director. Join us in spearheading influential policy initiatives and shaping a stronger future for California's nonprofit community! 


As the Policy Director, you'll take the lead on public policy initiatives, working under the guidance of our CEO and Board of Directors. The Policy Director plays a central role in shaping and leading our advocacy efforts and serves as a visible leader in guiding statewide policies affecting the nonprofit sector. This role involves researching, analyzing, and influencing public policies, regulations, and legislation. Additionally, it demands strategic thinking, a deep understanding of legislative processes, and a commitment to advancing CalNonprofits policy objectives. 

We're specifically seeking individuals based in California to serve in this critical role. 


  • Work with the CEO and the Board of Directors in the development and implementation of policy strategies, including engaging nonprofits in policy matters ensure a broad and inclusive approach. 
  • Take a leadership role in identifying, developing, and championing key policy issues, demonstrating a proactive approach to addressing critical challenges within the nonprofit sector. 
  • Work with CalNonprofits' lobbyist to manage legislative, administrative, and judicial efforts impacting California nonprofits. 
  • Research and write articles for CalNonprofits' publications and participate in promotion through social media, enhancing the organization’s visibility and influence. 
  • Support the Board of Directors’ Policy Committee, contributing expertise and insight to inform decision-making and strategic direction. 
  • Support members and partners in pursuit of CalNonprofits’ goals fostering a collaborative and mutually beneficial relationship. 
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with nonprofit advocates and government officials heightening CalNonprofits’ standing as a respected voice in the nonprofit sector. 
  • Represent CalNonprofits at conferences, speaking engagements, and coalition meetings, effectively communicating the organization’s perspectives and contributing to public discourse. 
  • Actively participate in the recruitment, hiring, and management of a small and dynamic policy coordination team. 


  • Represent and advocate for CalNonprofits and its constituents with appropriate federal, state, and local elected officials, their staff, and agency officials. 
  • Support membership recruitment, retention, and engagement objectives. 
  • Serve as a member of the CalNonprofits leadership team, understanding that in a small team people take on responsibilities outside their specific roles as needed. 
  • Attend and participate in meetings of the Board of Directors as requested by the CEO. 
  • Understand and support the values, mission, values, and goals of CalNonprofits. 



  • 6-8 years’ experience with advocacy/public policy work with state or local government legislatures and agencies. 
  • Strong knowledge of and passion for the California nonprofit and philanthropic community 
  • Experience developing, leading, and implementing legislative or community organizing campaigns. 
  • Experience drafting, reviewing, and analyzing proposed legislation and regulations. 
  • Understanding of legislative, administrative, and judicial advocacy. 
  • Excellent time management and analytical skills. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and interpersonal. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and with people and organizations of diverse backgrounds and political viewpoints. 
  • California state driver's license and willingness to travel in-state. 
  • Experience working for or with a statewide or member-based organization. 
  • Juris Doctor preferred, but not required. 


The compensation for this position is commensurate with experience, ranging from approximately $125,000 to $150,000 per year. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, along with a 403b retirement plan featuring a 6% match. 

Additional perks include company-paid life insurance and both long-term and short-term disability coverage. Employees also enjoy 15 paid time off (PTO) days and 12 paid holidays annually. To support remote work, a stipend for home internet and phone usage is provided.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate. The employee may be required to sit or stand in a stationary position for more than 50% of the time. This position constantly operates a computer and other office productivity equipment.
